I am beyond excited to begin to serve as superintendent of schools!  The 2020 -2021 school year will be my 15th year in the Schuylkill Valley School District and my 26th year in education.  My plans for the district are to work collaboratively with the school board, administration, teachers, support staff, parents, and community members to provide our students with the best educational and co-curricular experience possible.

I am certain some of you are wondering what you will see in me as your new superintendent of schools.  My answer is you will see more of what you have seen in my fourteen years as an assistant principal and principal in the district. First, I will be visible.  I will be in the hallways at arrival and dismissal.  I will be in classrooms, announced and unannounced.  I will provide feedback to teachers and staff when I do visit classrooms.   I will be at concerts, drama productions, athletic events, assemblies, PTO functions, and other community events.  I will continue the tradition of reading to Kindergarten and second grade students as well. In order to effectively lead the district, I will need to be a visible presence and actively observe what is happening in every aspect of the school district.

In addition to being visible, I will be an open and honest communicator.  I say what I mean and mean what I say.  I will confront problems head on and we will collaboratively make decisions that will move the district forward and be in the best interests of our students. We need to be decisive with curriculum, standards for learning, behavior, and in other areas.  Being decisive, means that we may not always make the correct decisions.  As long as we are reflective and make adaptations to the decisions we have made if they are not working, we will continue to move the district forward.

Schuylkill Valley is a unique school district.  We have a highly intelligent, energetic, and innovative teaching staff.  We have supportive parents who send their children to school every day armed with what they need to be successful.  We have a school board who is hard working and constantly looking for ways to provide us with the resources and policies we need to be successful.  We have loyal, dedicated support staff members who continually go above and beyond what is expected to meet the needs of our student body. We have excellent coaches and club advisors who dedicate countless hours to provide their students with an excellent co-curricular experience and help our students to learn life lessons and create memories that will last a lifetime. Most importantly, we have nice, respectful, intelligent, and well-rounded students who deserve our time, effort, dedication, and commitment to doing what is best for each and every one of them!!!

I welcome questions, comments, concerns, as well as positive feedback.  Feel free to contact me via email at mmitchell@schuylkillvalley.org or by phone at 610-916-5442.  I look forward to serving our community and helping to lead Schuylkill Valley to overall educational and co-curricular excellence.
